Snoring/Sleep Apnea
Help for snoring and even mild to moderate sleep apnea is now available
by means of removable dental appliances. These appliances are relatively
small and easy to wear, making them easy to use even when traveling.
The procedure is noninvasive (no surgery) and reversible. And the
total cost of therapy is considerably less than the cost of alternative
treatments. Since most insurance plans in Alabama are reluctant
to cover this treatment, Dr. Jay will make arrangements to have
the therapy paid for in monthly installments in order to make treatment
affordable.
Snoring is caused
by the narrowing of the airway while sleeping, usually from an over-relaxed
tongue. Large tonsils, a thick soft palate, or excessive tissue
in people who are overweight are also causes for snoring.
Obstructive
apnea occurs when the airway is completely blocked and breathing
stops momentarily while sleeping. Then the brains oxygen level
falls until the sleeper is (hopefully) partially awakened, at which
time the tongue returns to a normal position accompanied with a
loud gasp. This is a dangerous medical condition and should
be checked out by a sleep physician!
Dental appliances
work for both obstructive apnea and benign snoring by holding the
lower jaw forward, which pulls the base of the tongue away from
the back of the throat.
